Research and clinical practice have shown us that people living with Parkinson’s disease often have difficulty swallowing, even in the early stages of the disease. The signs of a swallowing disorder can sometimes be subtle and go unnoticed.
These four video clips, designed in collaboration with speech therapists and Parkinson Québec, aim to help people living with Parkinson’s disease and their loved ones to identify the signs related to swallowing and speech disorders and to develop strategies.
Capsule 1 : Understanding dysphagia
Parkinson’s disease is very often accompanied by dysphagia, which is difficulty chewing and swallowing food and liquids. This capsule aims to inform you about the nature of swallowing difficulties.
Capsule 2: Recognizing dysphagia on my loved one
Have you noticed any changes in your loved one’s eating skills? This capsule helps you recognize the signs of difficulty chewing and swallowing on your loved one, what resources are available and when to see a specialist.
Capsule 3: Strategies to optimize meal times
In this capsule, we present you different strategies to optimize your meals. These strategies can include splitting your meals, eating when your medications are most effective, etc.
Capsule 4: Understanding the difficulties with voice and speech
More than 90% of people living with Parkinson’s disease are affected by voice and speech difficulties. This capsule aims to inform you about the nature of the difficulties related to voice and speech and to offer you strategies to preserve and improve your vocal capacities.
