Gérard Tardif

I have been living with Parkinson’s disease for the last 7 years. I believe that it is not our challenges that define us, but our actions. Previously chief financial officer of the creative agency Sid Lee, one of my tasks was risk management. When I finally decided to talk about what was happening to me in my workplace, I mentioned that I was given special attention to prepare for succession, if necessary. I then organized 40 one-on-one meetings that turned out to be 40 hours of love.

My colleagues were fully supportive. Words did not always come to me instantly. Since I am calm but talkative, everyone knew what was happening to me and accepted the discomfort without completing my sentences.

I do not deserve any credit. Naturally optimistic, I do not project myself into the past or the future. I live in the present moment while easily accepting the grief that comes with life and aging. I used to run half-marathons for pleasure and to challenge myself. I switched to biking and ellipticals when my muscles became rigid to the point of preventing me from running. I no longer need to perform at this level and have chosen to invest myself more in pleasure, especially by getting socially involved on the board of directors for organizations such as Parkinson Québec.

I do not feel alone or isolated, quite the contrary. My colleagues even created the Unisson and Défi Vélo at their own initiative to raise awareness of the disease and Parkinson Québec.

I found good listening skills with Parkinson Québec when I needed them.

Thank you for all your support!
